Bump Stocks: What You Need to Know

What is a Bump Stock?

A bump stock is a device that can be attached to a semi-automatic rifle to increase the rate of fire. When a bump stock is installed, the recoil from the rifle is used to bump the trigger back into firing position, allowing for a much faster rate of fire than is possible with a standard trigger.

Legality of Bump Stocks

Bump stocks are currently legal in the United States, but there is a growing movement to ban them. In 2018, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) proposed a rule that would have banned bump stocks, but the rule was challenged in court and is currently on hold.

The Las Vegas Shooting

Bump stocks were used in the mass shooting in Las Vegas in 2017, where 58 people were killed and hundreds more were injured. The gunman used a bump stock to fire hundreds of rounds of ammunition in a matter of minutes.

Public Opinion on Bump Stocks

Public opinion on bump stocks is divided. Some people believe that bump stocks are dangerous and should be banned, while others believe that they are legal and should be allowed for civilian use.
